Air/Water/Thermal Control
Targeted building-performance upgrades that reduce drafts, moisture risk, and heat loss, guided by building science.
“This is the ‘boring’ stuff where a majority of the comfort, longevity, and energy efficiency of a building are decided, and yet, it is not understood by or given the attention it needs by most builders. We use high quality materials and have extensive training and knowledge in the building science principles that make these layers do what they are supposed to.” -Aidan W.
What to expect
This is the work that changes how a home feels to live in, consumes energy, and lasts through time. We assess the building as a system, identify the highest-impact improvements, and execute the details carefully, especially at transitions and penetrations.
- Identify root causes, not symptoms, and design to control those root causes
- Improve continuity at transitions and openings
- Moisture-aware water management strategy. It’s not all about keeping water out, its also about letting water out.
- Work executed cleanly and methodically

Air | Vapour | Water
We only use systems we know and trust for our projects: Pro Clima Membranes, Stego, SIGA, and Huber ZIP system being some of the ones worthy of mention. Each has their scenarios where they shine, and different high performance product lines for different use cases. For more information check out their sites below 👇
Thermal
The realm of insulation can be overwhelming with options once you get past the hardware store shelves. Here’s a few we love(not an exhaustive list), and would be happy to discuss using for your next project
Common project types
ROOF SYSTEMS:
These primarily focus on water management(biggest single risk factor) and ventilation. In a true high performance home however, some of these layers are flipped/combined to optimize for air tightness so they look much more like a wall.
WALL SYSTEMS:
Walls are often built with the right ideas in mind, but poor execution and material choices due to lack of understanding and undervaluing these details in the budgeting phase. A good wall stops liquid or vapour entering the wall from either direction, but likewise allows it exit in either direction.
BELOW GRADE SYSTEMS:
Below grade systems are unique in that they are more constant state. The weather doesn’t change underground. Due to this fact, the system is designed uni-directionally. Blocking liquid or vapour from entering the system, but only allowing it to exit on the inward direction.

FAQs
Do I need a full renovation for this?
In most cases, these layers function as a system, and it is a fairly extensive thing to fully adjust. However, in most cases you can adjust one small area at a time. This is one of the reasons it is important to get right the first time!
Can you help prioritize what matters most?
Absolutely. This is part of the process. We’ve got to the point where if we aren’t confident it will function, we won’t do it.
Will this reduce heating and cooling costs?
Yes. The single biggest factor for energy costs is air tightness, with a close second on thermal layering.
